Voxstar's List of Covers Sep. 19th, 2007 @ 01:38 am
I've been working on this off and on from my WoW guild's forums. Haven't updated it in a month or so, but I plan on starting on it again when I have some free time. Included are links for your pleasure.  Seriously...check out the links.  There's some pretty cool stuff floating around.

Feel free to suggest other songs that have been covered that I should add.  I have a list I've yet to get to, but I'm always looking for more.

"All Along the Watchtower"- Bob Dylan (1967) Jimi Hendrix (1968) -Apparently Hendrix played all the part but the drums on his original recording.  I also came across a version by U2 and Dave Matthews Band.  I think DMBs version is  REALLY kickass...check it out fer sure.

"Behind Blue Eyes"- The Who (1971) Limp Bizkit (2003)

"Blue Monday"- New Order (1988) Orgy (1999)

"Boys of Summer"- Don Henley (1984) The Ataris (2003) -Note the difference in the lyric referring to the Cadillac.  I really liked that they updated the reference. That particular line is about a group that used to be counter-culture being plastered on mainstream goods being used by the now grown up people who used to be part of that sub-culture...sort of the essence of the song.

"Hurt"- Nine Inch Nails (1994) Johnny Cash (2002)

"In the Air Tonight"- Phil Collins (1980) Nonpoint (2004) -The original was used in the Miami Vice series...the new one in the movie.

"Jolene"- Dolly Parton (1974) Mindy Smith (2003) The White Stripes (2004) -I saw Mindy in concert opening for a band called Jump, Little Children.  This song sent chills down my spine when she sang it.  Amazing live with just her and her guitar.

"Land of Confusion"-  Genesis (1986)  Disturbed (2005)

"Over the Rainbow"- Judy Garland (1939) Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole (1993) -One of the best songs ever written in my opinion.  Everyone can relate I'd think.

"Riders on the Storm"- The Doors (1971) Creed (1999)

"Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting"- Elton John (1973) Nickleback w/ Kid Rock (2003)

"Simple Man"- Lynyrd Skynyrd (1973) Shinedown (2004) -My personal favorite song...of all time.  I can't help but listen to this and try to make it a lifestyle.  It's my motto, my theme song, my ideal.  I love both the original and the cover.  I've wanted to get the words Simple Man tattooed on me for quite a while.

"Smooth Criminal"- Michael Jackson (1987) Alien Ant Farm (2001) -There are quite a few references to Michael Jackson in the AAF video.  Check wikipedia's entry on Smooth Criminal for a list.

"Spiderman Theme Song"- Cartoon (1967) Aerosmith (2002)

"Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"- Eurythmics (1983) Marilyn Manson (1995) - Good cover.  I like.  For those who want to hear Marilyn do a bad cover, check out his version of "Like a Virgin" by Madonna.

"Thank You"- Led Zeppelin (1969)  Chris Cornell (1997) Tesla (2007) -Far as covers go, I like Cornell's a lot more...it's not quite as similar to the orignal as Tesla's, but Tesla rock your world, so you love Tesla.

METALLICA-

"Die, Die My Darling"- The Misfits (1984) Metallica (1998)

"Sabbra Cadabra"- Black Sabbath (1973) Metallica (1998) -Metallica's version also contains part of the song "A National Acrobat" in the middle.

"So What"- Anti-Nowhere League (1981) Metallica (1998) -Apparently ANL heard these two drunk guys trying to one-up each other at a pub and this song was conceived.  I think it's hilarious.  In the Metallica video you'll note it's the very beginning of their set because they always play "The Ecstasy of Gold" from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly at the beginning of their concerts.  This is the version heard at the S&M concert (which I'd pretty much sell my soul to have seen).

"Stone Cold Crazy"- Queen (1974) Metallica (1993) -This song was one of the hardest and fastest of the time when Queen played it.  Here's another version from a Freddie Mercury Tribute concert where Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and James Hetfield (Metallica) play/sing along with the remaining Queen.

"Tuesday's Gone"-  Lyrnyd Skynyrd (1973) Metallica (1997) -Metallica's version has several guest artists, including Pepper Keenan of Corrosion of Conformity, Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kenney of Alice in Chains, "Big" Jim Martin, John Popper (Blues Traveler) on harmonica, Gary Rossington on additional guitar and Les Claypool of Primus on banjo as Metallica hosted a radio program out of San Jose, CA (KSJO). James is the only member of the band to appear on the track on most of the vocals.

"Turn the Page"- Bob Seger (1973) Metallica (1998)

"Whiskey in the Jar"- The Dubliners (1989)  Thin Lizzy (1973) Metallica (1998) -Some lyrical differences.  Why?  'Cause it's a folk song that's probably more than 200 years old.
